Our Brand Ambassador’s thoughts on the opening day of ‘The Masters’

For me The Masters signifies the start of the golfing season and I can’t wait to watch the action unfold this week. It hasn’t been long since The Masters was last played in November, delayed due to the pandemic, but now it’s back in its usual Spring slot. Unfortunately I won’t be travelling to Augusta due to Covid, I’ll be in the studio in London. I’ve covered The Masters since 2015 on location and it’s hard not being there! It’s such a special place. I was talking to Dame Laura Davies who I worked with in the studio last weekend and I was saying normally when you look forward to something so much, when it happens it often falls short! Seeing Augusta National for the first time didn’t disappoint! I look forward to returning there next year.

As for this year, the course will play firm and fast and hopefully will give us a European winner at the end of the week! I really like the chance of Jon Rahm who has just become a father for the first time. I love everything about the Spaniards game and believe him becoming a Major champion is only a matter of time. I think he will arrive at Augusta in a calm, free space, yes he hasn’t practiced much over the last week and he certainly won’t have slept much! But the lack of expectation and increased perspective could help him. He’s also one of the best competitors out there.

As for other favourites I really like Justin Thomas. His performance at The Players was staggering. I love JT’s creativity, his ability to work the ball, and I don’t think there’s a better pitcher off tight lies in the game. I also think we’ve seen a maturity to Thomas, both game wise and personality, and I think he’s ready to add Major number two to his CV.

In terms of British hopes, Lee Westwood is in great form. Westwood has 9 top three finishes in Majors but as we all know, is still waiting for that elusive first! Paul Casey has a great Masters record and is in superb form this year having won in Dubai on the European Tour.

So the wait is nearly over! Watch all the action on Sky Sports through the week, it really is one of the greatest sporting events on the calendar! Let’s hope it inspires you to find plenty of birdies out on the golf course!
